WELA’s big step

WELA is becoming an independent organisation!

We’re thrilled to share with you that Women’s Environmental Leadership Australia (WELA) is becoming an independent organisation.

WELA was founded in 2016 as a project hosted by The Green Institute, with an independent Steering Committee.

With our work expanding, we realised that for WELA to grow and support women’s leadership for our environment and climate in all sectors and communities, we needed to become an independent organisation.

Julie Lyford OAM* was appointed as the inaugural Chair of the WELA interim board.

We’ve registered as a company limited by guarantee, the Steering Committee has become our interim board, we’ve confirmed our initial constitution and now we’re in the process of registering as a charity.

Will you join us as one of our first members?

*Julie brings decades of experience in governance and leadership for our environment to this new WELA role. As Chair of Groundswell Gloucester, Julie was involved with successful campaigns to stop the AGL coal seam gas field and open cut coal mine from going ahead in the Gloucester and Manning Valley catchments in NSW. Julie is a former Councillor and Mayor of Gloucester Shire Council, a former registered nurse, an experienced board member and a WELA alumna.
