Women Leading on Climate: In conversation with Christiana Figueres

Christiana Figueres shares: “What message would you share with women and gender-diverse climate leaders in Australia right now?”

Naarm (Melbourne) | April 2026

From 27–30 April, Women’s Environmental Leadership Australia (WELA) joined over 6,000 global feminist leaders in Naarm (Melbourne) for the Women Deliver Conference 2026, one of the world’s largest convenings on gender equality, climate, health, and human rights.

Across the week, we co-hosted two powerful Women Leading on Climate gatherings that brought together leaders across sectors to explore what feminist climate leadership looks like in practice: one with former Australian Prime Minister Hon. Julia Gillard AC, and another with global climate leader Christiana Figueres. We were deeply privileged to hear from two powerhouse women of the feminist and climate movements, whose leadership has shaped global progress and continues to inspire action across generations.

Reflections from Christiana Figueres

We hosted a conversation with Christiana Figueres, one of the world’s most influential climate leaders and architect of the climate Paris Agreement, co-convened with the Australian Environmental Grantmakers Network (AEGN).

Christiana offered a powerful framing of feminist just transitions: one that centres care, equity, and systems transformation, not only decarbonisation. The conversation brought together leaders working across climate, environment, philanthropy, and policy to explore what it means to build truly just and inclusive futures.

Christiana also reflected on the urgency and opportunity of this moment, as global negotiations, regional transitions, and feminist movements converge.

Join us for what’s next

The Australian Chapter of Women Leading on Climate is building a national network of women and gender-diverse leaders across sectors who are shaping Australia’s response to climate, nature, and just transitions. Connected to a growing global coalition, the network brings together leaders to strengthen relationships, share insight, and drive collective action.

As Australia prepares for a critical period of climate decision-making, including the lead-up to COP31, there is a clear need for stronger connection, collaboration, and leadership across sectors.

If you are in an executive, senior, or influential role and working to shape climate, environmental, or justice outcomes, we invite you to join the Australian Chapter of Women Leading on Climate here.
