Sign the Open Letter: A just transition for whole communities at COP31 and beyond

Call on Minister Chris Bowen to ensure women and gender-diverse people’s leadership, work and solutions shape the transition to a fairer, climate-resilient future

The transition away from fossil fuels will shape the future of our communities. The people who live, work and care in those communities must have a say in shaping what comes next.

Women’s Environmental Leadership Australia (WELA) invites you to sign an open letter that calls on Minister Chris Bowen to champion a strong, practical and properly resourced framework for a transition that works for whole communities.

We’re talking about a just transition that goes well beyond the bounds of the energy industry. A transition that creates jobs and supports workers, recognises the paid and unpaid care that sustains our communities, and values First Nations knowledge and leadership. One that gives women and gender-diverse people from diverse backgrounds a genuine say in decisions and an equitable share of the benefits.

At COP31 in Türkiye, countries will work on how to implement the Just Transition Mechanism, an international framework to support fair transitions for workers, communities and economies. As Australia prepares to serve as President of Negotiations, there is an opportunity to shape what a just transition for all of us looks like in practice  on a global scale.

Sign the open letter by midnight Sunday, 1 Nov.

What Australia can do at COP31

A practical proposal is already on the table. The Women and Gender Constituency have laid out a clear roadmap to operationalise the Just Transition Mechanism through coordination, knowledge sharing, action and support.

Minister Bowen should champion this approach at COP31, helping countries and communities access the resources they need to put just transition into practice.

Australia must lead at home, too.

The transition ahead is an opportunity to lead the way on bold and gender-responsive climate action. To build communities where people can thrive, Country is cared for, and the benefits of change are shared equitably.
